When you see a Victoria’s Secret Angel on the runway, “imperfection” is maybe the farthest word from your mind. But even when someone is seemingly perfect, that’s never actually the case because what is perfect anyway? On Twitter, Martha Hunt served up a much needed reminder that it’s the differences between us that make us beautiful.
Martha tweeted about her scars, letting the world know that she’s proud of hers because they make her unique and strong. Instead of trying to hide her “imperfections,” Martha wrote that she happily displays the long scar down her back and the one on her abdomen.
“Scars are uniquely beautiful and they tell a triumphant story about you. I have a long one down my back and one on my lower right abdomen,” Martha tweeted. “I wouldn’t be who I am without my scars. What are yours? I urge you to wear them with pride. #imperfectionisbeautiful”
Martha’s scars definitely tell a story of strength. The long scar on her back is from scoliosis, a condition where the spine is curved in an unnatural way. During Scoliosis Awareness month, Martha talked about her struggle with scoliosis, saying it’s not only her motivation for a strong body, but it’s given her the ability to be mentally strong too.
“Although I lived with the negative stigma of scoliosis, I turned it into a positive thing in my life,” Martha told the Scoliosis Research Society. “It was my ultimate motivation for a strong body and strong mind.”
Martha’s attitude is definitely inspiring. Many people go out of their way to hide their scars, but Martha is right. Scars tell a story about us and show that we’ve survived. They’re a symbol of strength, experience and uniqueness, and many of Martha’s fans agree
Martha chooses to celebrate her scars because she knows they differentiate her, and make her special. Instead of all striving to look one way, we should emulate Martha’s attitude. We should celebrate our differences because they make us beautiful, but also because they make us a lot of other things worth celebrating.
